Fire Inspections - Commercial Buildings 


The Guilford County Fire Marshals Office provides state mandated fire inspections of commercial buildings on a rotating basis.  If you have questions about the process or to schedule an inspection, please call (336) 641-7565. 


Fire Alarm Permits 


A construction permit is required for the installation of or the modification to a Fire Alarm system. Construction documents for Fire Alarm systems shall be submitted for review and approval prior to any system installation. Construction documents shall include, but not be limited to, all of the following:

  1. A complete floor plan of the building.
  2. Locations of alarm initiating and notification appliances.
  3. Details showing ceiling heights and types of construction.
  4. Annunciation locations.
  5. Power connection location.
  6. Battery and voltage drop calculations.
  7. Conductor type and sizes.
  8. The interface of fire safety control functions.
  9. Manufacturers model numbers and listing information for equipment, devices and materials.
  10. All systems and their components shall be listed and approved for the purpose for which they are installed.

A 100 % acceptance test is required upon completion of the installation of the Fire Alarm system. A minimum of two copies of the as built drawings for the alarm system shall be supplied at the time of the system test. These plans shall identify the location and address of each alarm device installed in the system. This test shall be witnessed by the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Plans may be submitted to the Guilford County Fire Marshal’s Office at 1002 Meadowood Street, Greensboro, NC  27409. Inspections shall be scheduled a minimum of 48 hours in advance by calling Guilford County Fire Marshal’s Office at 336 641-7565 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday or complete the form below.
 


Fire Suppression System Permits

Construction documents for Fire Suppression systems shall be submitted for review and approval prior to any system installation. Construction documents shall include, but not be limited to, all of the following:

  1. A complete floor plan of the Kitchen or areas the system will be installed in.
  2. A complete Fire Suppression system layout.
  3. A complete layout of all equipment protected by the suppression system.
  4. Details showing ceiling heights and types of construction.
  5. Complete flow point calculations.
  6. Manufacturers model numbers and listing information for equipment, devices and materials.
  7. All systems and their components shall be listed and approved for the purpose for which they are installed.
  8. A 100 % acceptance test is required upon completion of the installation of the Fire suppression system. This test shall be witnessed by the Fire Marshal’s Office. At the time of inspection all equipment protected by the system shall be connected and fully operational.

Plans may be submitted to the Guilford County Fire Marshal’s Office at 1002 Meadowood Street, Greensboro, NC  27409. Inspections shall be scheduled a minimum of 48 hours in advance by calling Guilford County Fire Marshal’s Office at 336 641-7565 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday or complete the attached form.
 


Sprinkler Permits 


A construction permit is required for the installation of or the modification to an automatic sprinkler system. Construction documents for sprinkler systems shall be submitted for review and approval prior to any system installation. Construction documents shall include, but not be limited to, all of the following:

  1. A complete floor plan of the building.
  2. A complete site plan.
  3. A complete Sprinkler system layout.
  4. Details showing ceiling heights and types of construction.
  5. Complete Hydraulic calculations.
  6. Complete Fire Flow information, to include time and location of test.
  7. Manufacturers model numbers and listing information for equipment, devices and materials.
  8. All systems and their components shall be listed and approved for the purpose for which they are installed.
  9. A 100 % acceptance test is required upon completion of the installation of the Sprinkler system. This test shall be witnessed by the Fire Marshal’s Office. A complete hydro test is required to be witnessed by the Fire Marshal’s office upon the completion of installation of the underground and aboveground sprinkler piping. Installation of thrust blocking on underground piping requires and inspection by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
